A key activity of 2005: The Year of Languages is to capture the attention of the media and the American public. To do this effectively, ACTFL has produced a number of Public Service Advertisements (PSAs) promoting language learning and education and asking the public to “speak up” for language education in their communities.
To get our important message in front of as many people as possible, we need the help of our supporters all over America! All language educators have a personal and professional stake in this effort to build support for language programs. You can help us get these PSAs shown on television and printed in newspapers and magazines in your community.
How? If you’re not already an ACTFL member, start your involvement by joining ACTFL now! Your membership will not only provide you with valuable information and materials you need to promote your own language program, but it will give you the tools to advance your professional career. You can click here to find out how to join online now.

Once you’ve joined ACTFL, then sign up to become a Year of Languages Ambassador. Find out how by clicking here, or go to the links listed in the upper left hand corner of this page. One link will lead you to a valuable document that takes you step-by-step through the process of getting exposure for our public service messages through television and radio station managers and newspaper editors. The other link is your pledge form to sign up as an Ambassador.
If you have the ability to copy these PSA files onto a CD, please take them to your local television and radio station managers and newspaper editors. Explain the importance of our initiative and ask them to give these as much exposure as possible. We’ve provided all the information you need to do this in the links on this page, but if you need help, you can contact us by clicking here.
Please act now! Getting involved in the 2005: The Year of Languages initiative will be a major step in your contribution to boosting language programs in your school and nationwide!

ACTFL members staged a "Language Pop Quiz" on the streets of Chicago during our November conference. Using their language specialty, our teachers asked pedestrians "What time is it?" We wanted to see how many people would be able to respond correctly ... and in what language they would respond!
